New Housing Option for Seniors: St. John’s Guest House

Published 9:30 am Monday, April 1, 2024

St. John’s Lutheran Community is set to introduce an innovative housing option for individuals aged 62 and older starting in April. The Luther Place campus will be transformed to accommodate 12 new board and lodging units, catering to senior citizens who desire companionship without the need for nursing services.

The creation of the St. John’s Guest House aims to fulfill an unmet requirement in Freeborn County, providing a community-centered living environment for independent seniors. CEO and Administrator Shanna Eckberg expressed the organization’s commitment to addressing the needs of seniors in Freeborn County through this service.

To qualify for residency at the St. John’s Guest House, prospective residents must meet specific financial and health criteria. They should have the ability to move freely without assistance and independently manage their medication. Two payment options will be available: private pay or housing support through Freeborn County, with no licensing as HUD housing.

Renovations have been completed to ensure a comfortable and modern living space for the residents. The rooms have been updated with fresh paint, new closet spaces, and amenities such as local phone service, basic cable, and a half bath. Additionally, three meals a day and two snacks will be provided to cater to the dietary needs of the residents.

The St. John’s Guest House also offers an opportunity for residents to engage in activities with Knutson Place residents if they so choose. This intergenerational interaction fosters a sense of community and social connection among the seniors.

CEO Shanna Eckberg emphasized the importance of starting with a conservative number of 12 units to gauge the specific needs of the community. This approach allows for a thorough assessment of the program’s success and ensures that accommodations and services can be implemented effectively.

As St. John’s Lutheran Community introduces this exciting new housing option, it coincides with the organization’s plan to reopen Sheltering Arms, a nursing home facility that specializes in memory care services. The board and lodging rooms at the St. John’s Guest House will be conveniently located on the first floor, near the administration office and Knutson Place.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more about the board and lodging option, please contact Angie Hanna, licensed practical nurse and housing manager at Knutson Place. St. John’s Lutheran Community is committed to providing excellent housing options and assistance for seniors in Freeborn County, ensuring their well-being and happiness in their golden years.
